Personalized gifts app for Shopify

Pixel Wrangler is a Shopify product customizer for personalized gifts. Names, dates and monograms are text fields with the fonts, colors and character limits you allow; photo gifts use uploads cropped by a mask; mugs and tumblers get a wrap-around side; and every paid order renders a print-ready PNG or PDF. Plans from $99 a month with a 7-day free trial.

Updated

Gifts are where personalization stops being a feature and becomes the product. Nobody buys a plain mug for a fortieth birthday. They buy the one with the name on it. Pixel Wrangler gives a Shopify store the pieces gift ranges run on (text fields for names, dates and monograms, photo uploads with masks, wrap-around sides for drinkware) and renders the print file itself when the order is paid, so the busy season is spent packing, not preparing artwork.

The three kinds of personalization gifts sell

Almost every personalized gift is one of three things, sometimes all three at once:

  • A name, a date or a monogram. "Emma", "Est. 2019", "JRB". Text on a product, in a font you chose.
  • A photo. The dog, the wedding, the grandkids. An image the shopper brings, cropped to fit.
  • A pick from your designs. A birthstone, a zodiac sign, a floral corner, a team crest. Your artwork, their choice.

Pixel Wrangler has a placeholder type for each, and one template can mix them. A memorial candle might carry a photo placeholder inside a circular mask, two text placeholders for a name and dates, and a sticker set of small motifs. See Templates 101 for how the pieces fit.

Names, dates and monograms as text placeholders

A text placeholder is a slot the shopper types into, inside a bounding box you draw on the product. You decide what they control:

  • Fonts. A script for wedding gifts, a serif for the anniversary range, a monogram font for initials. Google Fonts by URL or your own .woff2, .otf or .ttf, and the same font renders in the print file.
  • Colors. A named palette (Gold, Rose, Charcoal), or a single color when the product only comes one way.
  • Character limits. The setting that saves gift merchants the most grief. A monogram placeholder capped at three characters is a monogram; without the cap it's a paragraph.
  • Lock position. Locked, the name sits exactly where the engraver or press expects it. With the lock off, the shopper can nudge, scale and rotate inside the box.

Placeholder hints do quiet work here. "Their name" beats "Enter text", and "Max 12 characters" stops the overflow before it happens. Emoji and unsupported scripts are blocked at input with a warning, so a heart emoji never becomes a blank square on a keepsake.

For a classic three-initial monogram: one three-character field, a monogram font, position locked. That's the whole setup.

Photo gifts: uploads, masks and background removal

An image placeholder takes a JPG or PNG up to 10 MB by default. The shopper drags, resizes and rotates it inside the box you drew. Pair the placeholder with a mask (a transparent PNG cutout) and the photo is clipped to a circle, a heart, an ornament shape or a locket frame, on the storefront and in the print file.

Two things protect the finished product. A low-resolution upload triggers a quality warning before checkout; the shopper can continue, but they've been told, which turns a refund into a re-upload. And Wrangler AI's background removal can be switched on per template, so a pet portrait doesn't arrive with the sofa behind it. It's billed per use, with nothing extra to install.

Mugs, tumblers and anything that wraps

A mug isn't a front and a back. It's one continuous print area that wraps. Pixel Wrangler handles that as a side: name it "Wrap", set the canvas to the full printable panel, and the shopper designs across it while the base image shows the mug behind. Products with genuinely separate panels (a cushion with two faces, a keyring front and back) get one side each, and every side renders into its own print file.

Set the output for the material: PNG at 150 DPI for sublimation transfers, 300 DPI for direct print, 600 if a photo product wants the extra.

Engraving and laser: what the file is

Plenty of gift ranges are engraved rather than printed, so here's the straight answer. Pixel Wrangler renders raster artwork: a PNG with a transparent background, or a PDF wrapping the same render, at up to 600 DPI. Engraving or laser software that accepts an image file can use it as-is.

The files are not vector. If your process needs vector paths, trace the PNG in your engraving software, or work from the text itself: every name and date the shopper typed rides on the order as line item properties (_pw_text_1, _pw_text_2 and so on), so your operator can set it in the engraver's own font with nothing lost. The live preview still does its job either way. The shopper saw the layout before they paid.

Peak season without the ticket pile

Gift stores live and die in the six weeks before Christmas, and the support load usually isn't the product. It's "did my photo come through?", "I spelled the name wrong" and "can I see it before it ships?".

The live preview answers the third before it's asked. For the second, Edit design on the order opens the shopper's design in the same editor and regenerates the print file, before fulfillment and within 90 days, with the original kept. See Editing a customer's design. For the first, the thumbnail on the order line and in the confirmation email shows exactly what was submitted.

Volume never blocks a sale, either. Plan order caps are soft: going over shows you an upgrade prompt and keeps rendering.

The print file, on every paid order

When an order is paid, each side renders into the file you configured: format, dimensions, DPI and a filename built from your prefix, the variant code and the side name, so GIFT-WH-Wrap-a1b2c3d4.png sorts itself. The order is tagged px-artwork-ready, the file links sit on a metafield, and a Download Artwork action appears on the Shopify order. Pull files in bulk with the Artwork Export API or hand them to a supplier by hand. The print-ready files guide covers both.

Questions merchants ask

How do I add a monogram option to a Shopify product?

Add a text placeholder to the template with a three-character limit, pick a monogram font, set the colors the shopper can choose, and lock the position so the initials sit where the press or engraver expects them. The monogram shows on the live preview and rides on the order as a line item property.

Can shoppers upload a photo for a photo gift?

Yes. An image placeholder accepts JPG or PNG up to 10 MB by default. Shoppers drag, resize and rotate inside the box you drew; a mask crops the photo to a circle, heart or frame; and a low-resolution upload gets a quality warning before checkout so the print is not a surprise.

Does Pixel Wrangler handle mugs and tumblers?

Yes. A wrap is a side in the template: set its canvas to the full printable panel and shoppers design across it with the mug shown behind. Products with separate faces get one side each, and every side renders into its own print-ready file at the DPI your sublimation or direct-print line needs.

Can I use it for engraving?

The files are raster, a transparent PNG or a PDF at up to 600 DPI, not vector. Engraving or laser software that accepts an image can use them directly. If you need vector paths, trace the file, or set the text yourself from the _pw_text line item properties every order carries.

What happens if a shopper misspells a name?

Open the order in the app and click Edit design. The shopper's design opens in the same editor, you fix the name, and saving regenerates the print file with an edited suffix. The original is kept and can be restored. Editing is available before fulfillment and within 90 days of the order.

Can I offer a discount for buying several personalized items?

Yes. Spend & Save shows a discount progress bar inside the customizer, such as add two more to save 10%, with tiers by quantity or spend. You create the matching automatic discount in Shopify, and Pixel Wrangler shows shoppers the tiers while they design.
