Custom Reorders — let customers reorder a design they've bought
A View design button in your customer accounts that shows the exact design a customer ordered, reopens it in the customizer to tweak, and sends them through a normal checkout. Setup, what shoppers see, the Reorder tag, and when a design can't be reordered.
Shopify's built-in Buy again recreates a cart from the product and quantity only — for a customised product that means a blank design. Custom Reorders fixes that: a View design button in your customer accounts shows the customer the design they ordered and reopens the customizer with it pre-loaded. They tweak it (or don't), add it to cart and buy again as a completely normal new order. The original order and its design are never changed.
Custom Reorders is included on every plan. It needs Shopify's new customer accounts — the button lives in the account pages, which classic (legacy) customer accounts can't show. It's switched on per store: contact us and we'll enable it, then follow the setup below.
Setup
Once we've enabled Custom Reorders for your store, add its blocks to your customer accounts:
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Customer accounts and click Customize next to Configurations. This opens the checkout and customer accounts editor.
- Switch to the Orders page of customer accounts. Under Main, click Add block and add Reorder Notice, a short note telling customers to use View design rather than Buy again. Click the block to change its heading and text. The note links customers to their Profile page, where Designs you've ordered lists every design.
- Still on the Orders page, open Order list → Order actions and add Reorder Design. This is the View design button; it shows on the order list and on each order's status page.
- Switch to the Order status page. In the Apps panel, add Reorder Line Designs: it shows Your design under each customised item.
- Switch to the Profile page, click Add block and add Reorder Design, the Designs you've ordered card.
- Save.
Only orders placed after the feature is enabled get a View design button — the app records the link between an order and its design as the order comes in.
What your customers see
- Orders page — the Reorder Notice at the top, and a View design action on every order that contains a customised item. It opens a panel showing the order's design or designs, each with Preview artwork and Reorder this design.
- Order status page — the same View design action, plus Your design under each customised item, with the design itself, Reorder this design and Preview artwork.
- Profile page — Designs you've ordered: every design they've bought, with its thumbnail, a search box and Most ordered / Product A–Z sorting, and Reorder this design and Preview artwork on each.
Clicking Reorder this design opens the product page with the customizer already loaded with that design — same text, images, colours and placement as the order. The customer can change anything or nothing, then Add to cart and check out as usual. Pricing, options and stock are whatever the product has today; the reorder is a new purchase, not a copy of the old order.
Customers need to be signed in to their account for any of this to appear — the button is scoped to the customer who placed the order, and nobody else's account can see or open it.
What you see
- The new order is tagged
Reorderin Shopify, so you can filter reordered orders from the orders list or trigger your own automations. - It flows through order processing like any other customised order: fresh print-ready artwork is generated for it, with all the usual order files and exports.
- The Analytics page gains a Reorders card — how many reorders you've had, the revenue they brought in, and your most-reordered products. See Analytics.
When a design can't be reordered
The button and the design simply don't appear (or the panel skips that design) when:
- the order was placed before Custom Reorders was enabled for your store;
- the design is older than the store's design retention window — currently 90 days from the order date;
- the product no longer has a template assigned, or the template or design was deleted;
- the order has no customer record attached (for example some draft or point-of-sale orders).
If a customer opens a reorder link that has since expired, they see a short "this design is no longer available" page instead of the customizer.
Good to know
- Editing a reorder before buying never touches the original order's artwork — it's a brand-new design for a brand-new order. To fix a design on an order that's already been placed, use Editing a customer's design on an order.
- Deleting a customer (including a GDPR erasure request) removes their reorder links.
- Reorders don't bypass anything: your customizer's rules, surcharges and required steps apply exactly as they did the first time.
- Keeping templates and design assets in place keeps old designs reorderable — the app warns you when you delete an asset that saved customer designs still use.
