Glossary
The words Pixel Wrangler uses — template, side, layer, placeholder, print file, snapshot, artwork link and the rest — in one place.
The terms you'll meet in the app and these docs, in alphabetical order.
Artwork link — the _pw_artwork__* link written on a cart line for each print file. It shows a "being generated" page until the file renders, then redirects to it. See Order flow.
Asset — an image in your Design Assets → Assets library, usable as a sticker, background or mask in any template. See Design Assets.
Background — the layer behind everything else on a side. Customers pick one per side from the options you offer; with none offered, the base image shows through.
Base image — the blank product photo the customer designs over. Set in the Canvas tool. Not part of the print file.
Canvas — the printable area drawn over the base image, where customers can place elements. Sized in the Canvas tool; its rulers run 0–2000.
Cart editing — the Edit design pencil on a cart line that reopens the customizer. See Cart editing.
Cross-sell — offering the shopper's finished design on the template's other products after add-to-cart. See Products and variants.
Customise Button — the theme app extension block that puts the button on product pages. Also Cart Design Preview (cart page block) and Cart Preview (Global) (app embed for drawer carts). See Installing.
Cut-out / Background Removal — the AI tool that removes an upload's background. $0.01 per image. See Wrangler AI.
Design Assets — the app page holding your four shared libraries: Assets, Font options, Text colours, Icon options.
Embedded layout — running a template's customizer inline in the product media gallery instead of a modal. See Embedded layout.
Image Generation — the AI tool that creates an image from a shopper's prompt. $0.05 per use.
Image placeholder — a slot the customer fills with an upload (or an AI image). Up to 10 per template.
Layer — a grouping of elements within a side; each side has up to three. Layer order decides what sits in front.
Line item properties — the _pw_* data attached to each customised cart line (and optional customer-visible properties). See Line item properties.
Mask — an asset with Mask mode on that cuts the artwork to a shape. With Mask mode off it's an overlay that sits on top.
Modal layout — the default: the customizer opens over the product page.
Order editing — correcting a customer's design from Orders → Order files → Edit design after purchase. See Editing order designs.
Order files — the app page for one order: thumbnails, previews, final artwork, jobs and source images. See Orders and order files.
Output Settings — the builder tool where you set the print document (File Type, DPI, Page Size, File Name Prefix), the print files, and which side lands on which file. See Sides and output files.
Overlay — see Mask.
Placeholder — any editable slot in a template: text element, image placeholder, sticker, background or mask.
Plan — Starter, Growth or Scale, billed monthly through Shopify with a 7-day trial. See Plans.
Print file — one output file the template produces per order, in the format and size of the print document. Sides are placed on print files.
Regenerate — re-render a file (thumbnail, preview or final artwork) from the saved design, from the Order files page.
Retry Failed — re-queue an order's failed render jobs, from the Orders page.
Sales Channel Protection — the checkout guard that blocks customisable products added without a design. See Sales Channel Protection.
Side — one canvas within a template: Front, Back, Sleeve, Wrap. Each has its own layers.
Size guide — a Shopify page shown from a Size Guide button in the size-and-quantity step.
Snapshot — the frozen copy of a design taken at add-to-cart. Print files render from it, so later template changes don't alter an order. Its id is _pw_snapshot_id.
Spend & Save — tiered quantity or spend discounts shown as a progress bar and applied as a Shopify automatic discount. See Surcharges and Spend & Save.
Starter template — a ready-made template you copy from Start from a template on the Home page. See Templates 101.
Sticker — your artwork the customer can place. Multi-select lets them add many copies.
Style Remix — the AI tool that transforms an upload into a chosen style. $0.05 per use.
Surcharge — an amount added to the unit price when a side on a surcharged print file is customised. Shopify Plus only.
Template — the whole thing a customer designs on: canvas, sides, placeholders and output settings, assigned to one or more products.
Text element — a text placeholder. Up to 10 per template.
Variant identifier — a short code per option value (M, BK) that goes into print file names.
Variant images — per-variant blanks that swap the base image when the shopper picks a colour.
Word Art — the AI tool that renders a shopper's words in a lettering style preset. $0.05 per use.
Wrangler AI — the app page and the umbrella name for the four AI tools. See Wrangler AI.
px-artwork-pending / -ready / -failed — the order tags that track print-file rendering. px-design-edited marks orders you've edited. See Order flow.
